Restore backup

Before a project is transferred to the controller, the controller creates a backup of the previous state. If something goes wrong during the transfer or the wrong project was transferred, the previous state can be brought back with this backup.

You will find the function in the Control menu under Restore backup.... The Studio must be connected to the controller.

What a backup contains

A backup consists of two parts that can be used separately:

Project – program, visualization and settings as they were created in the Studio and transferred to the controller.
Persistent data – values the controller remembers during operation, for example setpoints, meter readings or settings changed in the APP. These values only come into being on the controller and are not contained in any project file on the PC.

In the list, the columns Project and Persistent data show the size of both parts. If the persistent data column reads none, the backup contains only the project.

When backups are created

Automatically before every project transfer to the controller.
Before every restore – the state currently running becomes a backup itself. A restore can therefore be undone.
Manually with Create new backup.

The controller keeps the last ten backups, the oldest one is dropped each time. If the controller does not have enough free memory, no backup is created. If the controller runs unlicensed in demo mode, no backups are created.

Backups on the controller

These buttons act on the controller.

Button	Effect
Refresh list	Requests the list of backups again. Nothing is changed on the controller.
Create new backup	Creates a backup of the running project and the persistent data. The running project remains unchanged.
Restore on controller...	Transfers the selected backup to the controller, see below. The controller restarts afterwards.
Delete backup...	Deletes the selected backup on the controller, for example to free up memory. The running project remains unchanged.

Load from the controller to this PC

These buttons load data of the selected backup from the controller and save it as a file on the PC. Nothing is changed on the controller.

Button	Effect
Save project as...	Saves the project of the backup as a project file (.zpro). Afterwards the Studio asks whether the project should be opened right away – this way an earlier state can be viewed or edited further without transferring it to the controller.
Save persistent data as...	Saves the persistent data of the backup as a file (.db). This file is transferred back to a controller via the Control menu – Save persistent values on the controller. Disabled if the backup contains no persistent data.

Restoring

After clicking Restore on controller... the Studio asks what should be restored from the backup:

Project and persistent data – the controller returns completely to the state of the backup.
Project only – the project of the backup is transferred, the current persistent data of the controller is kept. Useful if a wrong project was transferred but the values set during operation are up to date.
Persistent data only – the project on the controller remains unchanged, only the persistent data is reset to the state of the backup. Useful if settings were changed by mistake.

If the backup contains no persistent data, only Project only is offered. Persistent data only requires a controller with version 2.3144 or higher; with an older controller this option is disabled.

After a further confirmation the controller first backs up its current state, then transfers the selected parts and restarts. The connection to the Studio is closed in the process.

Notes

Persistent data is assigned to the elements of the project. If it is restored to a different project state, only the elements present in both states receive their value. Elements added later keep their default values.
If there is not enough free memory to back up the current state first, the restore is cancelled and nothing changes on the controller. In this case delete older backups.
